Usage & Application

Oxalic Acid (C₂H₂O₄ · 2H₂O) is a strong organic acid with powerful reducing, descaling, and stain-removalcapabilities. In textile processing, it is primarily used for metal-ion removal, rust cleaning, pH adjustment, and color correction. It is also widely applied in multiple industries due to its versatility.

1. Applications in Textile Industry

✔ 1. Rust & Iron Stain Removal

Oxalic acid is highly effective at dissolving iron oxide (rust) stains from:

Cotton

Polyester

Blended fabrics

Dyeing machines and pipelines

Benefits:

Removes yellow/brown iron spots

Restores fabric brightness

Does not damage most fibers when properly diluted

✔ 2. Descaling & Machine Cleaning

Used for removing:

Limescale (CaCO₃ deposits)

Iron residues

Metal contamination in dyeing vessels

Applications include:

Jet dyeing machines

Jig machines

Heat exchangers

Stainless steel pipelines

✔ 3. pH Adjustment in Finishing Processes

Commonly used in finishing baths to:

Lower pH gently

Stabilize chemical formulations

Improve hand feel and shade stability

✔ 4. Chelating Agent for Metal Removal

Oxalic acid complexes with:

Iron

Calcium

Magnesium

Other metal ions

This prevents:

Dye precipitation

Shade inconsistency

Uneven dyeing

Especially useful in reactive dyeing, where metal ions can affect shade brightness.

✔ 5. Color Stripping & Correction

Used to remove:

Off-shades

Excess dye stains

Yellowing caused by metals or bleaching reactions

Common in:

Cotton dyeing correction

Polyester cleaning before reprocessing

✔ 6. Bleaching Aid

Although not a primary bleach, oxalic acid is occasionally used to:

Enhance whiteness

Remove mild oxidation stains

Improve brightness after peroxide bleaching

2. Dosage Guidelines (Industry Range)

Actual dosage depends on machine type, contamination level, and fabric sensitivity.

Rust removal: 1–5 g/L

Descaling/machine cleaning: 0.5–3% solution

Chelating in dye baths: 0.1–0.5 g/L

Color correction: 1–3 g/L

Finishing bath pH control: 0.1–0.3 g/L (as needed)

3. Advantages

Excellent rust and iron stain remover

Strong chelating power for metals

Improves dyeing uniformity and shade accuracy

Easy to dissolve and handle

Effective at low concentrations

Versatile for both fabric treatment and equipment maintenance

4. Applications in Other Industries

✔ 1. Metal Cleaning & Surface Treatment

Rust remover for metals

Cleaning of stainless steel equipment

Polishing of metal surfaces

✔ 2. Detergents & Household Cleaning

Used in:

Scale removers

Bathroom/kitchen cleaners

Rust removal agents

✔ 3. Wood & Furniture Industry

Used in wood bleaching

Restoration of aged wood

Removal of iron stains caused by water and nails

✔ 4. Leather Tanning

pH adjustment

Removal of iron contaminants

Improving leather brightness

✔ 5. Chemical Manufacturing

Intermediate chemical used in producing:

Oxalates

Pharmaceuticals

Dyes

Metal polishes

✔ 6. Water Treatment

Metal-ion removal

Scale dissolution

pH control in specific processes

5. Safety & Handling

Strong acid → avoid contact with skin and eyes

Use gloves, goggles, and protective clothing

Store in cool, dry place

Keep away from oxidizing agents and alkalis
