Ferrous Chloride/FeCL2 solution is used in effluent treatment as a coagulant in textile processing plants due to its high potency to remove color-suspended solids and toxic dissolved solids. Aside from use in the laboratory synthesis of iron complexes, ferrous chloride serves as a coagulation and flocculation agent in wastewater treatment, especially for wastes containing chromate or sulfides. It is used for odor control in wastewater treatment. Ferrous chloride is used as a coagulant in both wastewater and drinking water treatment and as a sludge dewatering and odor control agent and also Ferrous chloride is used to manufacture ferric chloride.

Ferrous chloride reduces the cost of treatment without effecting the quality and clarity of treated water. It results in less formation of sludge in the lime treatment process. In some cases, it prevents the usage of acids used to get down PH and in Paper mills effluent treament, it is used to reduce C.O.D and B.O.D together with decolorization.
